Reindeers taste like chocolate!

No Christmas without Omas Schokoplätzerl. It isn’t possible. In Germany, it’s a tradition to make Christmas cookies – and for me there is no way to have Christmas without the chocolate cookies my grandmother used to make. Some years ago, my mother had to re-produce chocolate cookies on december 26th as there weren’t many Schokoplätzerl left…

You need:

300 g sugar
3 egg yolks
250 g butter
375 g flour
1 pinch of salt
1 pinch of baking powder
2 packages of vanilla sugar
1 tblsp cocoa powder
100 g of chocolate, melted
150 g ground almonds or hazelnuts

Prepare a dough: mix butter, flour, egg yolks and salt. Add the rest of the ingredients and knead well, but just as long as necessary (the ingrediens should be mixed well and not too crumbly, but don’t knead it for longer time) – if it’s too dry, add some milk or rum.
Wrap in plastic and put in the fridge at least for 1 hour – also overnight.

Then make quarters, leave 3 of them in the fridge and roll out on of them. Cut cookies with a cookie cutter and put them on a cookie sheet. Make sure not to use too much flour for rolling out the dough. Bake in the preheated oven (about 175°C) for 11 minutes.

If the dough gets too warm (that’s when it starts to stick on the table…), put it in the fridge and let it cool. Meanwhile, use the other parts of the dough to continue making cookies.

1 hour after baking, you can roll them in vanilla sugar, if you want. Store in an airtight container.
